EEG Artifact Detector — specifics

Menu Process → Signal → EEG Artifact Detector 1.0.0. See the shared methodology for the five criteria and the common parameters — this page only covers what's specific to EEG.

Not yet validated

This plugin is functional but its PSD frequency bands and z-score thresholds have not been checked against a real EEG recording with known bad channels. Treat the defaults below as a reasoned starting point, not a measurement.

Neighbors: 3D nearest electrodes

Same principle as MEG: neighbor_count (default 5) nearest electrodes by 3D position. If channel positions are unset, criteria 2/3 are skipped with a warning.

PSD frequency bands — configurable

EEG sampling rates and montages vary far more than the single MEG system the MEG plugin was calibrated against, so the frequency bands are exposed as parameters instead of fixed:

Parameter Default Used by
psd_band_low_hz / psd_band_high_hz 20 / 70 Hz Criterion 3 (broadband vs. neighbors) — targets typical scalp/jaw EMG contamination.
psd_peak_low_hz / psd_peak_high_hz 2 / 100 Hz Criterion 4 (own-baseline peak) — covers powerline (50/60 Hz) and its first harmonics.

Both ranges are clamped to the file's actual Nyquist frequency. If a configured band ends up empty for a given file's sampling rate, the corresponding criterion is skipped with a warning rather than computed over an out-of-range/empty result.

Bipolar montages

A bipolar derivation (electrode A minus electrode B) has no single unambiguous 3D position, which breaks the premise of criteria 2/3's spatial-neighbor lookup. If more than half of the current montage's channels are bipolar derivations, a warning is logged — computation still proceeds, but those two criteria may be unreliable on that recording.
